Garden Outbuildings
Site-integrated outbuildings become the center of outdoor living. Outdoor living spaces support a life beneath the stars, close to the living energies of flowing water, the soundscape of owls, frogs and dawn breezes. An outdoor living room complements a healthy interior house environment and, if microclimatically designed, extends one’s enjoyment in the landscape across the seasons. Outdoor living spaces have also been shown to enhance one’s quality of life and vitality. Studies on “bathhouse cultures,” such as in Finland and in traditional Japanese home sites have shown their link to personal and community wellness via a space for relaxation and release. In cold climates an outdoor living space is particularly important to maintain one’s connection to the earth, physical and mental acumen, and as a center for socializing and celebration.
